Part of our program is about not only healing youth, but healing communities and bringing generation’s together. The residential school system has created many problems - one being that the life experience of parents , elders and youth is very different and that parenting techniques that were learned in the home or on the land were often lost. Communication between these generations can be strained at times and for our Hiphop program to continue in a community, steps need to happen to ensure parent and elder support. For communities to heal in general all the generations need to come together.
We often get the Elders to try some DJ scratching on our turntables - as a way of showing to the youth at a very human level that great grandma will still try new things and share the moment with others. The visuals of this are powerful and very symbolic as we talk extensively about positive risk taking with the youth. This is a great example about everyone humbling themselves and sharing a laugh together. Here are some of the new DJ’s of the north.
